Hey BARS Family!

Looking to get more involved with BARS? Want to help make sure your fellow players have an amazing time each and every season? Have some great ideas you’d love to put into action? Well, we want YOU! Each of the below positions hold a unique place in the organization, helping to ensure that future BARS seasons go off without a hitch!

We’ve listed out all of the open leadership position descriptions and nomination process below.


GENERAL LEADERSHIP TEAM POSITIONS

  • Director of Communications

    • The Director of Communication will be responsible for our communication with the league members and potential league members as it pertains to recruitment. Their role will predominantly pertain to crafting organization-wide emails/messaging (such as for league registration and event announcements). They will work with the Board to receive incoming messaging to our general email address to triage and/or reply to those questions/comments as appropriate. In addition, the Director of Communications can provide content to league directors to include in their league-wide communications to disseminate information that may be relevant (i.e. upcoming events, philanthropic efforts, and announcements about the organization as a whole). They will work in conjunction with the Director of Marketing and Social Media in planning larger announcements for events and report to the Secretary.

  • Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

    • The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (“DEI”) will continue to embed our equity commitment into the organization’s culture and policies, while supporting the organization in furthering efforts towards DEI within all leagues. They will help develop the organization’s vision, mission, and framework, including implementation and effectuation of a DEI Statement, as well as ensuring the current player participation and anti-harassment non-discrimination policies continue to conform with the equity commitment of the league. The Director of DEI will create project proposals of DEI initiatives, to be reviewed by the general board, and may be implemented within the leagues upon board approval.

  • Director of Events

    • The Director of Events is responsible for overseeing the League Social Chairs and coordinating weekly post plays based on our sponsorship agreements. The Director of Events is also responsible for coordinating or planning organization-wide special events such as Holiday Parties, Pride Events, etc. In their role to oversee the League Social Chair, they may be responsible to plan and schedule the weekly post-play parties and offer guidance to the league social chairs with best-practices for event planning.

  • Director of Events, WTNB+

    • The WTNB+ Director of Events is responsible for overseeing the WTNB+ League Social Chairs and coordinating weekly post plays based on our sponsorship agreements. They are also responsible for coordinating or planning organization-wide special events such as Holiday Parties, Pride Events, etc with WTNB+ players in mind. In their role to oversee the WTNB+ League Social Chair, they may be responsible to plan and schedule the weekly post-play parties and offer guidance to the league social chairs with best-practices for event planning.

  • Director of Marketing and Social Media

    • The Director of Marketing & Social Media is responsible for communicating on behalf of: BARS (overall), Dodgeball, Kickball, and Bowling. They create online content for email blasts, website articles, Facebook posts (both paid ads and organic posts), Twitter content, Instagram posts, and any other BARS communication platforms. Design work is often necessary for Web Banners, Promotional Items, Tray Ads, Printed Flyers, Party Invites, etc. They also help organize any BARS presence at events and will run point for organizing and executing staffing events (i.e. Jock-a-thon, LGBT Expo, Charity Events, etc.).

  • Director of Philanthropy

    • The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for overseeing and representing all philanthropic interests of the organization, including community partnerships with SAGE, God’s Love We Deliver, City Harvest, The Center, Ali Forney Center and other nonprofit organizations throughout the city. Additionally, the Philanthropy Chair is responsible for overseeing BARS philanthropy-related events, such as the annual Kickball Turkey Tournament, along with external press and promotion. This chair will also serve as the liaison between BARS and other queer sports organizations, such as Front Runners New York, Gotham Cheer and The NY Ramblers.

  • Director of Social Media and Engagement, WTNB+

    • The WTNB+ Director of Marketing & Social Media is responsible for communicating on behalf of: BARS (overall), Dodgeball, Kickball, and Bowling.   • Director of Technology

    • The Director of Technology is responsible for managing the organization’s entire technology infrastructure. This includes IT, internal tooling, and full-stack development. The Director of Technology will execute on existing initiatives, spearhead new development projects, and evaluate digital solutions for all areas of the organization. Working closely with our Sports Directors, they will leverage APIs from Google Workspace, SquareSpace, and LeagueLobster to optimize and facilitate event registration and scheduling. They will also work with the Director of Marketing to deliver data-driven analytics and implement SEO best practices. The Director of Technology serves as Team Lead and will have the opportunity to build out a roster of talented individuals underneath them to accomplish these objectives and craft an unparalleled digital experience for our community.

BOWLING LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

  • Director of Bowling, Monday

    • The Sport Director roles are the main points of contact for all league players; they are responsible for organization and facilitating league-wide communication. They should be personable, love meeting people, and be great with names. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Arranging dates, times and special events with the sports venue; In conjunction with the rest of the board, organizing registration and facilitating team creation; Working on schedules/lane assignments; Facilitating social events with the Director of Events (i.e. after-parties).

  • Operations Manager, Monday

    • The Sport Operations Managers facilitate and coordinate the entire season logistically; they should be organized and love teamwork. Ops Managers are responsible for assisting in setup, facilitating team creation, creating lane assignments (for bowling), scheduling refs and handling equipment bags (for dodgeball and kickball), and inputting scores on the website. In conjunction with the Sport Directors, they’re responsible for maintaining a great relationship with the specific venues/fields where we play. They are a conduit for listening to player feedback, while helping to ensure games stay on schedule.

  • Director of Bowling, Sunday

    • The Sport Director roles are the main points of contact for all league players; they are responsible for organization and facilitating league-wide communication. They should be personable, love meeting people, and be great with names. LEADERSHIP NOMINATION PROCESS

If you want to throw your hat in the ring for any of these positions, send an e-mail to nominations@bigapplerecsports.com, filling out this form and fulfilling the 4 requirements listed below:

  1. Please provide a statement of interest to be shared with the nominations committee and current leadership, indicating your history with BARS, reason for seeking out a leadership team position, what you would hope to bring to the organization/group, and any other additional information you deem important to share. Suggested length: 1-4 paragraphs.

  2. Please share any sports you have participated in the past with Big Apple Rec Sports (Bowling // Dodgeball // Kickball).

  3. Please share any sports you are currently participating in or planning to register for the upcoming winter 2024 season: (Bowling // Dodgeball // Kickball).

  4. When emailing this form in, please attach a picture of yourself. Though this is an optional step, it makes it easier for voters to recognize you (some folks may not know you by your name).

You can also nominate your fellow league members! Send any nominations our way in the same format: who you are nominating and why you think they’d be perfect for the role. Before appearing on the ballot, we will reach out and make sure they accept the nomination.

The election will take place quickly after the nomination window closes. The ballot will be voted on by the current roster of leadership teams and board members.

The submission deadline is Sunday, December 31st, at 5:00 PM EST.
