The Board of Directors plays a crucial role in shaping the vision, mission, and overall strategic direction of BARS. Centered around the governance of the organization, this body is tasked with strategic planning, policy creation and oversight, and fiduciary/organizational accountability.

 Big Apple Recreational Sports 2025 Board of Directors Positions & Job Descriptions

1) COMMISSIONER / PRESIDENT:
 
The Commissioner shall have general supervision of the affairs of the Corporation, and shall keep the Board fully informed about the activities of the Corporation. The role of the Commissioner includes business development, branding, expansion, processes/policies and relationship development with other city leagues, sponsors, and members. The Commissioner will work closely with the Vice Commissioner to create a calendar for all sports divisions, oversee events and planning, deal with securing permits/facilities for league play, handle and respond to any incidents that occur within our leagues that go against the Corporation's rules/policies, and oversee all Board and Committee meetings. The Commissioner will work closely with the Executive Board to ensure development and execution of any and all ideas that are consistent with the Corporation's initiatives and missions.
 
2) VICE COMMISSIONER
 
The Vice Commissioner shall have such powers and duties as may be assigned to him or her by the Board or by the Commissioner as authorized by these by-laws. Duties include but are not limited to representing Big Apple Recreational Sports at league events and pan-athletic meetings; developing and maintaining good relations with outside organizations and affiliates (e.g. facilities, sponsors); Pride March registration; recruitment strategies. In the absence of the Commissioner, the Vice Commissioner shall perform the duties of the Commissioner but shall not take any binding action unless specifically authorized by the Board. In the event the office of Commissioner becomes vacant, the Vice Commissioner shall serve as Commissioner until a new Commissioner is elected.
 
3) SECRETARY
 
The Secretary shall be responsible for the giving and serving of all notices of the Corporation and shall perform all the duties customarily incident to the office of the Secretary, subject to the control of the Board, and shall perform such other duties as shall from time to time be assigned by the Board. The Secretary shall serve as the custodian of the organization's records (except records specifically assigned to other officers), including, but not limited to minutes; reports of officers, boards and committees; official correspondence; and other records (paper and electronic). All records shall be turned over to the new Secretary within fifteen (15) calendar days upon leaving office and shall be maintained physically and/or electronically for a total of seven (7) fiscal years. The Secretary shall issue notice of meetings and prepare the order of business for said meetings. The Secretary shall take minutes at all meetings and submit them for approval to the membership by the following meeting. The Secretary shall make sure official bylaws, special rules of order, standing rules, and current minutes books are available for reference at all meetings. The Secretary shall make the organization's records available to members. The Secretary shall ensure that newly elected officers/directors receive documents and access to appropriate organizational documents. 4) TREASURER
 
The Treasurer shall keep or cause to be kept full and accurate accounts of receipts and disbursements of the Corporation, and shall deposit or cause to be deposited all moneys and other valuable effects of the Corporation in the name and to the credit of the Corporation in such banks or depositories as the Board may designate. At the annual meeting of the Board and whenever else required by the Board, the Treasurer shall render a statement of the Corporation's accounts. The Treasurer shall at all reasonable times exhibit the Corporation's books and accounts to any officer or Director of the Corporation and shall perform all duties incident to the position of Treasurer subject to the control of the Board, and shall, when required, give such security for the faithful performance of his or her duties as the Board may determine. The Treasurer shall produce and publish to the Board an annual-operating budget for the League within sixty-days of the beginning each Fiscal Year. The Treasurer shall produce and publish a financial statement within thirty days of the close of each season, as defined in Section 9c below, to the Board. The publishing of season statements should be consistent with the League's Fiscal Year; S1 ends on Dec 31st and quarterly results of operations as of March 31, June 30, and September 30. All financial records (paper and electronic), including invoices, bank statements, canceled checks, paperwork,budgets, etc., shall be turned over to the new Treasurer within fifteen (15) calendar days upon leaving office. The Treasurer shall maintain physical and/or electronic records for the past seven (7) fiscal years.
 
5) COMMISSIONER OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION (DEI)
 
The Commissioner of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion of Big Apple Recreational Sports is responsible for leading and shaping the league’s efforts to create a welcoming and equitable environment for all players. As the Commissioner of DEI, you will collaborate closely with the Director of DEI to embed equity and inclusion into the league’s culture, policies, and practices. You’ll take a key role in defining and implementing our DEI vision, mission, and framework, including the creation and execution of a DEI Statement that reflects our core values. You’ll also ensure that player participation, anti-harassment, and non-discrimination policies align with our equity commitment and serve as a model for inclusion across all leagues. The Commissioner of DEI is responsible for the following:: ● Drive Strategic Initiatives: Develop and propose DEI initiatives—such as expanded inclusion groups—that promote engagement and belonging. Present these initiatives to the general board for review and implementation. ● Lead and Inspire: Serve as a thought leader and trusted advisor to the board, offering insight and guidance to address DEI challenges and deliver meaningful solutions. ● Strengthen Policies: Oversee the continual refinement of policies to ensure alignment with DEI principles and maintain a safe, respectful environment for all players. Overall, the Commissioner of DEI is a champion for equity and inclusion, ensuring these values are at the heart of the league’s culture and operations.
 
6) COMMISSIONER OF OPERATIONS
 
The Director of Operations shall manage and assist the directors of each sport and communicating any concerns or changes with the Executive Board. The roles and responsibilities of the Director of Operations include, but are not limited to, assisting with the pre-season organizational planning, registrations, post- season surveys, enforcement of policies and procedures, and organizational development and expansion.,The position shall provide administrative oversight of all league member relations matters, including player disciplinary actions. The Director of Operations shall adopt and enforce policies, subject to the control of the board, to ensure the safety, privacy and inclusive participation of all League membership.
 
7) COMMISSIONER OF WTNB+ PLAYERS
 
The Commissioner of Women, Trans, & Non-Binary Players of Big Apple Recreational Sports, shall serve as the leader and director for the growth of the Women, Trans, Non-Binary+ population in Big Apple Rec Sports. This Commissioner will serve the organization in leading the following aspects of development: • Partner alongside each sport Commissioner (Dodgeball, Bowling, Kickball, Pickleball) on the recruitment and retention of the WTNB+ population for that particular sport. The Commissioner of WTNB will spearhead initiatives to drive the WTNB player experience across each sport, including but not limited to leagues/time dedicated solely for WTNB+ players, social and networking events, and recruitment strategy items for these populations. • Collect feedback + data related to the experience of WTNB+ players, and present this data to the Board of Directors + Leadership teams to sustain the community or adapt to the needs of this population. The Commissioner of WTNB+ will possess dotted line leadership team reports from across each sport that will work in collaboration to represent the larger community and assist them in their recruitment + retention initiatives.
 
8) COMMISSIONER OF BOWLING
 
● Partner alongside each sport Director/Operations Manager on the general operations and expansions for Bowling in BARS. The Commissioner of Bowling shall work to review rules for the sport and adjust accordingly based on the growth and expansion of the sport. They shall also work in tandem with the Commissioner of Operations for equipment management & replacement, as well as identifying new venues for play.
● Collect feedback + data related to the experience of Bowling players, and present this data to the Board of Directors + Leadership teams to sustain the community or adapt to the needs of this population.
● The Commissioner of Bowling shall work alongside the Commissioner for WTNB+ Players in an effort to expand WTNB+ Initiatives growth and expansion across the sport.
● The Commissioner of Bowling shall work to mitigate issues or conflicts that may arise across the league, based on player feedback and experience. They shall also work with their social team and representatives to enhance the player experience and assist in the retention of players across the league, through various social programming.
 
9) COMMISSIONER OF DODGEBALL
 
● Partner alongside each sport Director/Operations Manager on the general operations and expansions for Dodgeball in BARS. The Commissioner of Dodgeball shall work to review rules for the sport and adjust accordingly based on the growth and expansion of the sport. They shall also work in tandem with the Commissioner of Operations for equipment management & replacement, as well as identifying new venues for play.
● Collect feedback + data related to the experience of Dodgeball players, and present this data to the Board of Directors + Leadership teams to sustain the community or adapt to the needs of this population.
● The Commissioner of Dodgeball shall work alongside the Commissioner for WTNB+ Players in an effort to expand WTNB+ Initiatives growth and expansion across the sport.
● The Commissioner of Dodgeball l shall work to mitigate issues or conflicts that may arise across the league, based on player feedback and experience. They shall also work with their social team and representatives to enhance the player experience and assist in the retention of players across the league, through various social programming. The Commissioner of Bowling of Big Apple Recreational Sports, shall serve as the leader and director for the sport of Bowling in Big Apple Rec Sports. This Commissioner will serve the organization in leading the following aspects of development: The Commissioner of Dodgeball of Big Apple Recreational Sports, shall serve as the leader and director for the sport of Dodgeball in Big Apple Rec Sports. 
 
10) COMMISSIONER OF KICKBALL
 
● Partner alongside each sport Director/Operations Manager on the general operations and expansions for Kickball in BARS. The Commissioner of Kickball shall work to review rules for the sport and adjust accordingly based on the growth and expansion of the sport. They shall also work in tandem with the Commissioner of Operations for equipment management & replacement, as well as identifying new venues for play.
● Collect feedback + data related to the experience of Kickball players, and present this data to the Board of Directors + Leadership teams to sustain the community or adapt to the needs of this population.
● The Commissioner of Kickball shall work alongside the Commissioner for WTNB+ Players in an effort to expand WTNB+ Initiatives growth and expansion across the sport.
● The Commissioner of Kickball shall work to mitigate issues or conflicts that may arise across the league, based on player feedback and experience. They shall also work with their social team and representatives to enhance the player experience and assist in the retention of players across the league, through various social programming.
 
11) COMMISSIONER OF PICKLEBALL
 
● Partner alongside each sport Director/Operations Manager on the general operations and expansions for Pickleball in BARS. The Commissioner of pickleball shall work to review rules for the sport and adjust accordingly based on the growth and expansion of the sport. They shall also work in tandem with the Commissioner of Operations for equipment management & replacement, as well as identifying new venues for play.
● Collect feedback + data related to the experience of Pickleball players, and present this data to the Board of Directors + Leadership teams to sustain the community or adapt to the needs of this population.
● The Commissioner of Pickleball shall work alongside the Commissioner for WTNB+ Players in an effort to expand WTNB+ Initiatives growth and expansion across the sport.
● The Commissioner of Pickleball shall work to mitigate issues or conflicts that may arise across the league, based on player feedback and experience. They shall also work with their social team and representatives to enhance the player experience and assist in the retention of players across the league, through various social programming.

 SUBMISSION PROCESS

REQUIREMENTS

The main requirement for ballot submission is having held a named leadership position for a minimum of one (1) year within the past three (3) years with Big Apple Recreational Sports. You can also nominate someone else, as long as they meet the above criteria.
 

BALLOT SUBMISSION

If you want to throw your hat in the ring for a position, send an e-mail to nominations@bigapplerecsports.com with answers to the below bullet points:
  • Tell us what position you’re submitting for.
  • Please share any sports you have participated in, and your history with, Big Apple Rec Sports ( Bowling // Dodgeball // Kickball // Pickleball ).
  • Provide a short statement of interest for the indicated Board position, the reasons for seeking out said position, what you would hope to bring to the organization. You can also provide any other additional information you deem important to share.
You can also nominate your fellow league members! Send any nominations our way in the same format: who you are nominating and why you think they’d be perfect for the role (we will then reach out to confirm that the nominee is interested in running).
 

TIMELINE

Once the submission window closes: the BARS Nominations Committee – a five-member task force comprised of both current and former Board members – will hold conversations with all submitted nominees to discuss their qualifications and ideas for the future of the organization. In conjunction with a vote by the full Leadership Team, the Committee will present their recommendations to the exiting Board, who will vote to certify the results.
